Bio:

Professor of Economics, holder of the Gus A. Stavros Eminent Scholar Chair and Director of the Stavros Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Economic Education at Florida State University. During 1999-2000, he served as Chief Economist of the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress. He is the coauthor of Economics: Private and Public Choice, (Thompson/South-Western Press). This text, now in its 10th edition, has been used by more than 1 million students during the last two decades. He is author (or coauthor) of numerous books and articles, including Economic Freedom of the World, an annual report published by a worldwide network of institutes and What Everyone Should Know About Economics and Prosperity, (1993), a book designed for the interested lay reader of economics. The English version of this book has been translated into 15 foreign languages.

His doctoral degree in economics is from the University of Washington. He has traveled extensively throughout Europe, the former Soviet Union, China and Latin America. During 1993-94, Dr. Gwartney was a Visiting Professor of Economics at Central European University in Prague, Czech Republic. A member of the Mont Pelerin Society, he was invited by the incoming Putin Administration in March 2000 to make presentations and have discussions with leading Russian economists concerning the future of the Russian economy. His professional publications have appeared in the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Institutional and Theoretical Economics, Cato Journal, and European Journal of Political Economy. His writings have also appeared in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Financial Times, and Investor's Business Daily.
