"Food for Thought and for Energy", a similar event now appears in the
official 1997 ESO manual
Description
This event will test a student's knowledge of food and its
contents, the food groups, and other nutritional information.
Number of Participants / Approximate Time
Up to 2 / 45 minutes
The Competition
1. Students will be quizzed on the basic elements of the four food groups
and will separate a list of foods into the appropriate groups.
2. Teams will analyze and compare FDA labels from popular foods to
determine vitamin, minteral, and caloric content. Students may be asked
to determine to determine the food group of an unknown item based on
certain nutritional values and make suggestions of healthier selections
for specific junk foods.
3. Students will be questioned on the properties of popular vitamins and
minerals and may
be asked to suggest foods with high or low amounts of particular
vitamins and minerals.
4. Students will have 45 minutes to complete the test. Time is not a scoring factor.
Scoring
The team with the most correct responses will be declared the
winner. Ties will be broken with pre-determined tie-breaker
questions.
