Logic and Research Design
The building blocks of scientific research: logic, research design, philosophy of science, and the scientific method
- Introduction to Logic (from Stefan Waner and Steven R. Costenoble at Hofstra University)
- Mathematical Logic around the World (a compilation of links from the University of Bonn, Germany)
- Science Methods, Misuse, and Madness (a course lecture from George Mason University)
- Characterization of Quack Theories (from the University of Texas)
Statistical Methodology
- Berrie's Statistics Page: Statistics and Simulations
- Gary King's Home Page (at Harvard University; a variety of software, data, and research links from one of the premier political methodologists)
- PolMeth / Society for Political Methodology (the leading organization for quantitative methodology in Political Science)
- Statistics Education Links (from Juha Puranen at the University of Helsinki, Finland)
- Statistics to use (a discussion of numerous statistics, including the mean, standard deviation, Fisher's exact test, ANOVA, chi-square, contingency tables, Student's t-tests, and ordinary least squares; also includes on-line forms to estimate some of these statistics; from the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University, in Minnesota)
- Testing Macroeconomic Models (by Ray C. Fair; originally published in 1994 by Harvard University Press)
Software
(Note: these sites mostly offer advertising, purchasing information, and support for those already using these commercial products; you won't be able to download most of this software here)
- Gauss
- Limdep
- Mathematica
- Calculus and Mathematica (from the University of Illinois)
- R Project
- SAS
- SAS Information Guides (from York University)
- SAS on the Macintosh Page
- Shazam
- SPSS
- Stata
- Web Pages that Perform Statistical Calculations
- File conversion software (useful for converting between SAS, SPSS, Stata, and numerous
other data formats):
- DBMS/Copy (from Conceptual Software)
- Stat/Transfer (from Circle Systems)
- MacStats (information about mathematical and statistical software for the Macintosh platform, focusing heavily on Mac OS X but also including information about much older software as well)
General-Purpose Data Collections
These resources offer a variety of data sets, generally outside of the realm of serious social science topics, that can be used in methodology courses. Examples include data sets on sports topics, car quality, and research in the natural sciences. While they may not be useful for the conduct of social scientific research, they have many other uses for the classroom or similar purposes.
- A Casebook for a First Course in Statistics and Data Analysis
- Chance Database Home Page (lots of interesting articles, course syllabi, and ideas to help teach or understand probability)
- Data and Story Library (from Carnegie Mellon; "an online library of datafiles and stories that illustrate the use of basic statistics methods")
- Dr. B's Wide World of Web Data (from John Behrens (Dr. B) at Arizona State)
- Electronic Dataset Service (from UMass-Amherst; a variety of data sets that are appropriate for analysis with specific statistical methodologies)
- Journal of Statistics Education Data Archive
- Sports Statistics on the Web (from the ASA's section on Statistics in Sports)
- StatLib Data Site
- StatSci.org's Data Sets Links
