King Malcom Ceanmore is traditionally credited with a crude form of the games in 1057.  The equipment used was that available in any village, wood shafted hammers, 28 pound and 56 pound weights, hay forks, bales of straw, round river stones, and long poles.  Caber is Gaelic for tree.  These heavy events tested agility, strength and endurance.

In 1746, after the battle of Culloden, the English proscribed any large gatherings by Scottish Folk.  By the 1760's the Scots had begun to defy the act and it was lifted in 1781.  Queen Victoria brought the games a larger following during her reign by regularly attending the Breamar Games and the royal tradition continues to this day.

There are seven heavy weight events that are held over the course of a day.  Putting the Stone is the same as the shot put, but a round stone of 15 to 20 pounds is used.  Weight throw for Distance with the 28 pound and the 56 pound weights.  These are steel weights with just a ring to hold them and a one handed spinning technique is used.  Weight Toss for Height with the 56 pound weight.  This is a toss for height using one hand and a bar like that used for pole vaulting to measure the height attained.   Sheaf Toss uses a bale of straw in a burlap bag and a three tined hay fork to toss it over a bar.  The sheaf weighs between 17 and 20 pounds. The Hammer Throw uses a steel ball weight attached to a long wooden handle.  The hammer is thrown over the shoulder without moving the feet.  The most unique event of all is the Caber Turn.  A caber is a tree from 16 to 22 feet long which may weigh as much as 130 pounds.  The athlete stands the caber on its small end and then picks it up and hurls it forward with a spinning motion. The object of this event is not distance but accurate "turning" of the caber to land at exactly the 12 o'clock position.  This is a very difficult event in which both strength and skill are necessary.   There will be A and B divisions as well as a Masters Division. Blue is seeking women athletes to compete in the Women's Division, a new classification this year.
