Background
I grew up in Jackson, Michigan, a city of about 50,000 near Lansing and Ann Arbor. I went to the University of Michigan as an undergraduate (B.A. in Political Science, 1991) and did my graduate work at the University of Illinois (M.A., 1993; Ph.D. 1996). I have been an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Florida State University from 1995-2001, and Associate Professor (with tenure) since August 2001. My research focuses on international conflict, with a special emphasis on interstate rivalries and on conflict over territory; I also founded and direct the Issue Correlates of War (ICOW) research project. My teaching centers around international relations theory, international conflict, and research methods. Separate pages on my web site offer more details on my background, my research, the ICOW Project, and my curriculum vitae (the academic equivalent of a resume).

- Note that I will be unavailable for the following scheduled office hours this semester: Friday Jan. 18, Friday Jan. 25, and Friday Mar. 28; I should be available for all other scheduled times, though.
General:
- By appointment (please email me or call me (office: 644-7318) to set up an appointment. My schedule is very flexible, beyond times when I am teaching or in meetings, so I'm sure we can arrange some time that will work for both of us.)
- Or just stop by (Of course, I can not guarantee that I will be in the office at any particular time except for my official office hours -- especially on days when I'm not teaching -- so you may find it helpful to email me or set up an appointment with me.)
Course Syllabi
Undergraduate
- INR 2002, "Introduction to International Relations"
(taught four times, most recently Fall 2006. I expect to teach this course about every other year, including Fall 2008.) - INR 3004, "Geography, History, and International
Relations"
(taught thirteen times, most recently Spring 2008 -- this course was previously known as INR 3933 or INR 3005. I expect to teach this course frequently, usually at least once per academic year.) - INR 3603, "Theories of International Relations"
(taught seven times, most recently Spring 2008. I expect to teach this course every year or two.) - INR 4083, "International Conflict"
(taught eight times, most recently Fall 2005. I expect to teach this course every year or so, including Fall 2008.) - POS 3713, "Understanding Political Science Research," a.k.a. "Research Methods"
(taught once so far, most recently in Spring 2007. I expect to teach this course occasionally.) - POS 3931, "Broward Hall Seminar in International Affairs"
(taught twice, most recently Fall 2005. This course is limited to participants in the Public Affairs Living-Learning Community, which I used to direct, and has been replaced by a Geography course taught by the community's new director; I do not expect to teach this course in its current form any time soon.)
Graduate
- INR 5007, "Core Seminar in International Relations"
(taught four times, most recently Fall 2001. It may be a while before I teach this again, as several of my colleagues will teach it for the next few years) - INR 5014, "Contexts and International Relations"
(taught five times, most recently Spring 2007 -- this course was previously known as INR 5934. I plan to teach this regularly in spring semesters, probably next in Spring 2009) - INR 5088, "International Conflict"
(taught three times, most recently Fall 2007. I plan to teach this every other fall semester, including Fall 2009. I may also develop a Master's-level version of this course, since this is such an important part of the Political Science Ph.D. program that Master's-level students who take it often risk getting left behind.) - INR 6910, "Advanced Research in International Relations"
(taught in Spring 1998; syllabus not available online. This course is taught every other year on a rotation among all IR faculty, with the newest hires teaching it first, so it will probably be a while before I teach it again) - POS 5736, "Research Design / Methods I"
(taught in Fall 1996. It will probably be a while before I teach this course again, as there are numerous professors in the department who want to teach it)
Other
- Drawing from my experience teaching INR 3004 and INR 5014 (both listed above), I was asked to give a presentation on Borders and Correlates of War (this link is to a .zip archive containing both the handout and the PowerPoint presentation itself) at a short course on borders held before the 2006 APSA conference in Philadelphia.
